A self storage unit feels cheap at around $250 a month. Then the months keep rolling over. After three years that same unit has cost you $9,000, and you own nothing at the end of it.
This guide puts real numbers side by side: renting a unit against buying a DIY mesh storage cage once. We use a 5 sqm space, the size most people rent, and show every step of the maths so you can swap in your own rent.
Quick answer: Renting wins for short or occasional needs. A cage wins when you will store things for more than about a year and have a garage, basement or car space to put it in. In our worked example, a 4.92 sqm cage pays for itself in roughly 7 to 15 months compared with a typical 5 sqm unit.
What you actually pay for self storage
A medium unit of 5 to 10 sqm is the most commonly rented size, and prices vary a lot by city and suburb. Rates checked 27 October 2026.
Size matters too. A small locker or cage of 1 to 3 sqm often sits around $80 to $150 a month, while a large unit of about 14 sqm can run $350 to $550. Inner-city sites sit at the top of every range, and outer suburbs sit near the bottom.
The headline rate is rarely the whole bill. Watch for:
- Admin or setup fees charged when you move in.
- Insurance, which is often compulsory or strongly pushed.
- A lock, which you usually have to buy.
- Rate rises once an introductory discount ends.
- Travel time and fuel every time you need something.
What a DIY mesh storage cage costs
For a fair comparison we use the 4.92 sqm fully enclosed storage cage with door, which is close to a 5 sqm rental unit. It costs $2,588 as a one-off, and a lock is included. If you already own a padlock, the padlock-ready version is $2,388. Prices were checked on 27 October 2026.
Smaller and larger sizes are available in the storage cages collection, including a custom-fit car park cage for apartment spaces.
Extras to budget for:
- Delivery. It is calculated by postcode and parcel weight, so enter your suburb on the product page for your exact figure. Free Click & Collect is also available.
- Optional shelving or hooks if you want to use the height.
- Your time. The cage ships as panels, posts and a gate, and goes together with basic tools. Our DIY installation guide shows how simple assembly is, with step-by-step videos.
Three year comparison
Here is a 5 sqm unit at three monthly rents against the $2,588 cage. Each self storage figure is monthly rent multiplied by the number of months, with no rate rises or fees added, so real costs will be higher.
| After | Self storage at $180/month | Self storage at $250/month | Self storage at $350/month | Mesh storage cage (4.92 sqm) |
| 12 months | $2,160 | $3,000 | $4,200 | $2,588 |
| 24 months | $4,320 | $6,000 | $8,400 | $2,588 |
| 36 months | $6,480 | $9,000 | $12,600 | $2,588 |
| Saved by month 36 | $3,892 | $6,412 | $10,012 |
The cage figure excludes delivery, so add your own freight cost from the product page.
Break-even: cage price divided by monthly rent equals months to break even.
- $2,588 ÷ $180 = 14.4 months
- $2,588 ÷ $250 = 10.4 months
- $2,588 ÷ $350 = 7.4 months
So the cage pays for itself in roughly 7 to 15 months, and in about 10 to 11 months at a typical $250 rent. After that point, every month of self storage rent is money you no longer need to spend.
One caution: this assumes you already own the space, such as a garage, basement or car space. If you have to rent or buy space just to put the cage in, the comparison changes.
Beyond the price
Cost is not the only difference between the two options.
- Access. A cage in your own garage or car space is open 24/7. A unit comes with opening hours and often a booking or gate code process.
- Airflow and damp. Welded wire mesh is breathable, which lets air move around your belongings. That helps with musty smells, though it does not make a damp space dry, so keep boxes off the floor.
- Security. The cage has a lockable gate, and you can see what is inside at a glance. Mesh is a visual and physical barrier rather than a solid room, so store your most valuable items accordingly.
- Flexibility. A cage is built from panels and posts, so you can plan it to fit your space, add panels later and take it with you if you move. A unit is a fixed size in a fixed location.
- Insurance. Contents cover varies from policy to policy. Check whether your home and contents insurance covers items in a garage or storage cage, and what a self storage operator's cover includes, before you decide.
When self storage is still the better choice
A cage is not right for everyone. Renting a unit makes more sense when:
- You need space for under about 6 months. The upfront cost will not have time to pay back.
- You are between homes. A unit goes wherever you need it, and you can walk away when you are done.
- You have no spare space at home. A cage needs a garage, basement or car space to sit in.
- You have a very large volume. Furniture from a whole house may outgrow a cage you can fit at home.
If any of those describe you, rent. If none do, run the numbers below.
How to work out your own numbers
- Measure your items. Lay out boxes and furniture, or measure the floor area they would take up, and allow room to walk in.
- Choose a size. Match your floor area to a cage size, or check the custom sizing options if your space is an odd shape.
- Use the calculator. Enter your dimensions into the storage cost calculator for the right components and quantities, then divide the total by your current monthly rent to see your break-even point.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a storage cage cheaper than self storage?
Over more than about a year, yes, if you already have the space. In our example a $2,588 cage costs less than a 5 sqm unit at $250 a month after roughly 11 months, and saves about $6,400 by month 36.
How long until a storage cage pays for itself?
Divide the cage price by your monthly rent. At $180 a month it takes about 14 months, at $250 about 10, and at $350 about 7.
Can I fit a storage cage in an apartment car space?
Often, yes. There is a custom-fit car park storage cage made for this. Check your owners corporation by-laws first, and read our apartment and car space storage guide.
Do I need council approval for a storage cage in my garage?
Rules vary by council and property type, so we cannot give a blanket answer. If you own a freestanding house, check with your council. In a strata building or a rental, ask your owners corporation or landlord before you buy.
Can I take my storage cage with me when I move?
It is built from panels and posts, so it can be unbolted and reassembled in a new space of a similar size. Our installation guide shows how the pieces fit together.
