Falling stock from pallet racking is one of the more common causes of injury in Australian warehouses. A dislodged carton, a pallet that's been pushed too far back, or a knock from a forklift can send stock straight into a walkway below, and the person underneath rarely sees it coming.
Under the Model Work Health and Safety Act, a business has a duty to manage the risk of objects falling from height. Pallet racking is one of the first things a SafeWork inspector will look at during a site visit, and it's also one of the cheapest risks to fix once you know what you're looking for.

Why pallet racking is a fall risk

- Racking positioned back-to-back with a walkway, aisle or workstation with nothing between them and the stock

What Australian WHS regulations expect
Under the Model WHS Act, a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) has a primary duty of care to eliminate or minimise risks to health and safety, so far as is reasonably practicable. Falling objects sit squarely inside that duty, and SafeWork Australia's guidance on managing risks of falling objects makes it clear that physical controls, like guarding or containment, sit higher up the hierarchy of controls than training or signage alone.
In practical terms, that means an inspector isn't just going to ask whether your staff know the rules. They're going to look at whether there's something physically stopping stock from reaching a pedestrian zone. Penalties for a serious breach can be significant for a corporation, but the more immediate cost is usually a workplace injury, a WorkCover claim, and the downtime that follows.
Types of rack protection
It helps to separate the products into two broad groups, because they solve slightly different problems.
- Rack guards and upright protectors: steel guards bolted to the base of the frame to absorb a direct forklift impact and protect the structure itself.
- End-of-aisle barriers: heavier-duty barriers placed where forklifts turn into an aisle, again focused on protecting the structure.
- Back guards: a mesh or solid panel fixed to the rear of a rack run, designed to catch stock that's pushed too far back before it falls into the space behind.
- Perimeter mesh panels: a barrier that separates a racking or storage zone from a walkway, office area or public-facing space, containing anything that falls rather than protecting the rack frame itself.

Step by step: planning and installing a mesh back guard
- Measure your racking bay depth, height and post centres before you order anything.
- Work out where protection is actually needed: the back of racking against walkways, the ends of aisles, and anywhere stock overhangs into a pedestrian path.
- Choose a panel height that matches or exceeds your rack height, using standard panels or a custom width from 500mm to 1050mm for tighter or irregular bays.
- Fix posts to the floor at each bay division, checking each one is plumb with a spirit level before you tighten anything down.

Rack protection vs perimeter guarding: what's the difference
